ABOUT THE ARTIST
WILLIE WHITE (1910-2001)
A self-taught artist, Willie White was born to a farming couple in Natchez, Mississippi, and attended school through the third grade. In 1929 he left his hometown to work on the “quarter boats” on the Mississippi River, eventually settling in New Orleans, where he worked as a waiter, then a janitor and finally a sign painter in the 1950s and 60s.
Observing artists in the French Quarter in the 1950s led him to develop an interest in painting and art. Using house paint, he experimented with different techniques, decorating his porch and fences with local subjects, and later developed an original visual language of fantastic horses, birds, watermelons, buildings, ships and planets inspired by television and his dreams.
Willie White died in 2001 in New Orleans. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, and the Birmingham Museum of Art, as well as many private collections.
