A beautiful example of a late 19th c. rustic antique terracotta amphora, likely French. Decorated with a salt-glazed banded wave decoration in aloe green and white.

Basilius Besler was a sixteenth century botanist, apothecary and publisher, who developed the first codex of botany, the Hortus Eystettensis, which fundamentally changed botanical art and the course of scientific history of the natural world.
A fine hand colored copper engraving from the first edition, the Peony is exquistely colored and is one of the most desirable works from this great piece of scientific and botanical history.
