An intriguing antique French La Mode “habille” diorama with hand painted gouache figure and scene embellished with applied silk and linen fabrics. The lady’s face is made from a plaster bas-relief cast and she is elegantly dressed for travel in an 18th century jacket and skirt with black flask tied to her hip. A walking stick and crossbody bag complete her peripatetic lewk. Her hair is worn low in a ponytail, a style unusual for a lady of her day and station. She makes a particularly rare and unusual subject.

Unsigned. These habille pieces were made in the era of the French Revolution ca. 1780-1800. A time capsule with original glazing featuring beautiful waved antique plate glass. Verso bears hand marbled backing paper and the label of a Parisian frame and cabinet maker.
